4 Things New Yorkers Don’t Know about 583 Park Avenue

583 Park Avenue is one of the crown jewels of New York’s Upper East Side. Built in 1923 by the renowned architectural firm of Delano & Aldrich, 583 Park Avenue has occupied the corner of East 63rd Street and Park Avenue for nearly a century. In recent years, the event space has hosted many of New York’s top events, but there are still a few things about 583 Park Avenue that many New Yorkers don’t know.

We Have a 2,500 Pound Chandelier

Even after our recent $10 million dollar renovation, one piece of 583 Park Avenue that remains entirely original is the venue’s 2,500 pound chandelier, one of the largest in New York. The chandelier has played a part in dozens of New York events, most notably when it was lowered to “runway” height during Jason Wu’s Fall 2013 runway show.

We’ve Taken an Eco-Friendly Pledge

In February 2015, the 583 Park Avenue team took a pledge to make every event that they host more eco-friendly. This eco-friendly pledge includes 13 items, including using biodiesel in vehicles, serving cuisine made with sustainable ingredients, and installing solar panels.

We are committed to not only treating our guests to the best service possible, but also to act as a positive member of our communities, both on a local and global scale.

Our Head Chef Was on Chopped

Chef Arvin Dhansew, Head Chef at 583 Park Avenue, is known for his innovative dishes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Did you also know that he was once a Food Network star?

In 2010, before joining 583 Park Avenue, Chef Arvin was featured on an episode of The Food Network’s “Chopped” entitled, “Raw Enthusiasm”. The young chef made oysters with cardamom & apricot compote, pan-roasted pork with pickles and for dessert, a sugar cookie sandwich with miso sauce. While he placed second in the contest, the Chopped judges praised his use of fresh fruit and exotic spices in each of his dishes.

Our Building Hasn’t Left Its Roots Behind

While these days 583 Park Avenue is better known for its lavish events, the venue is actually a church. The space has been home to the Third Church of Christ, Scientist, since 1923. The pews may be gone (the materials have been reused in the renovations), but the church continues to host weekly services and Sunday school, with a reading room that’s open on most days.
